What began as a playful multimedia experiment evolved into one of the most inventive musical projects of the 21st century. Created by Damon Albarn and artist Jamie Hewlett in the late 1990s, Gorillaz started as a “virtual band” combining music with animated characters. Originally a side project for Albarn, known for his work with Blur, Gorillaz quickly became his primary creative outlet.

The band debuted in 2001 with their self-titled album, propelled by the hit single “Clint Eastwood.” The record became a global success, selling over seven million copies worldwide. Their follow-up, Demon Days (2005), featured the smash “Feel Good Inc.” and cemented Gorillaz as a critically acclaimed act while expanding their sound with hip-hop, electronic, and world music influences.

Hewlett’s animated characters—2-D, Murdoc, Russel, and Noodle—gave the band a distinctive visual identity that balanced Albarn’s often darker themes. The project thrived on collaboration, working with artists such as De La Soul, Lou Reed, André 3000, Elton John, George Benson, Johnny Marr, and Bobby Womack.

Gorillaz continued pushing creative boundaries with albums like Plastic Beach (2010), an environmentally themed concept record, and The Fall (2011), recorded largely on Albarn’s iPad during tour. After a brief hiatus, the band returned with Humanz (2017) and The Now Now (2018), followed by the collaborative project Song Machine: Season One – Strange Timez (2020).

In the 2020s, Gorillaz remained creatively active with Cracker Island, a streamlined album featuring artists including Thundercat, Stevie Nicks, and Tame Impala. Celebrating their 25th anniversary in 2025, the band introduced their ninth album, The Mountain, released in 2026, which explores new sonic influences and themes of mortality.

Through constant reinvention and collaboration, Gorillaz have remained one of modern music’s most unique and enduring projects.
